How can I give a unique feeling to a traditional subject?

Christmas Card Type Design

This is a middle ground between tradition and innovation. The tradition comes from the Christmas setting and the family-centered subject. The idea of a family dinner set at the holidays embraces the concept of tradition. The innovation comes in the way of the sharp lines that make up the custom type and design elements, which are in contrast with the usual expectation of what a Christmas-centric design might be.

Project Description

When coming up with a design for a typeface, I thought it would be interesting to diverge from the typical expectation for the holiday look. While researching, I found an angular star tree topper that was stylized to have extreme shadows, so I used that style on a standard sans-serif font to come up with a sharp style that worked interestingly in contrast to the subject.

Typeface Design

Once I digitized my sketch, I played around with the colors and decided not to opt for a standard, harsh red and green palette, but rather one that nears being orange and blue to give off a colder, snowy red-and-green look. In combination with this, I used the angular nature of the letters to arrange them in a specific way.

These two concepts would use assets from the logo to build a scene for the outside of the card. The first runs with a more forest-themed look, but the second one depicts a home that would offer comfort. The final concept would end up combining the looks of these two drafts.

Drafts

This final version fixes the format of the outside and changes the fence color to green to bring unity to the color scheme. Also featured here is the inside of the card, which features the inside of the home with a Christmas tree, as well as both a visual and written form of the ingredients in a recipe, plus the instructions for that recipe.
